We have a 40 y.o. Brick house w vent heating, with terrible mildew in Basement. As soon as you go down the steps to the basement it hits you.

What has worked for you?

Would any of these do it?

Run a very strong dehumidifier non stop.
Buy one with a pump and a drain hose to bathtub(unless you have drain hole in the floor!)
My parents bought one without a pump and we couldn't understand why water wasn't draining properly.
It's not practical to empty every day (or twice a day!)
