Hi!
im an (in)experienced mom!
I thought I had it all down to pat before I gave birth to my little one, but turns out iv got no clue what im doing!

really need some advice from some other bottle feeding moms.
when I ask the midwives they are so useless!

my baby is just 6 weeks, on the small side.
hes having 150ml(just over 5 oz) about every 4 hours.
I try to push him off till 4 hours.
he was going roughly that time anyway.
I do wake him up if its been 4 hours since his last feed, during the day.
I hope im doing the right thing.
he has gone a longer stretch in the night a couple of times-say 5/6 and once even 7 hours.
should I be offering a bottle in the night every time he wakes up after 4 hours?

because, when he does have a bottle at night he never actually finishes the bottle, and sometimes I feel like hes not so hungry. like when he wakes up hes not starving, even if hes past his time for a feed.

iv got no clue...

I do try to settle him first with a dummy, but for how long do I persist? sometimes he looks like hes settling and then hel be up really soon after...
I dont want to bring him in my bed just so he has a longer stretch and its very tiring to keep getting up to settle him/pop dummy back in.

I hate not knowing what im doing...

thanks in advance!

He should be fed every time he wakes up at night if it's every four hours.

During the day I would not push off feedings. I would feed when he is hungry.

Feed more during the day!

Babies have growth spurts and will sometimes NEED the extra
And sometimes yes at night too. He’s too little.
He knows what he needs, listen to him mama. He’s telling you.

I have bottle fed all 4 of my kids and bottle feeding a 4mo currently.
5 oz sounds like a lot for a 6 week old. My baby eats 5oz at a time at 4 months, about every 3 hours. Is he really finishing all those bottles?
I basically feed on demand from birth. I never wake up my babies to eat, even as newborns. 3 out of 4 have slept pretty much through the night starting at about 3 months (one was at 7 months but she was never a good sleeper). My baby now sleeps through the night almost every night. If she does wake up I first try giving her a pacifier a few times, then will feed her if she doesn't stop crying. I wouldn't intentionally not feed at night until 7 or 8 months.

5 ounces is way too much for a 6 week old. At 6 weeks the normal amount is 3 oz every 2 1/2-3 hours. My 5 month old still gets 4 oz. You don't need to wake baby for feedings. If he's hungry, he'll wake up by himself. But it's normal to wake up every couple of hours at this age.

5 oz is a lot for a 6 week old. 4 hours is a big time gap as well.

How much does your baby weigh now? According to my pediatrician, in general a baby should eat 2 1/2 times his birth rate (but in ounces) over a 24 hour period, up to 32 ounces.

If your baby weighs 10 pounds now, he should be eating around 25 ounces in 24 hours. If he eats every 3 hours, that would be 8 feedings at around 3 1/2 ounce per feeding - I would prepare 4 ounces and see how much he is actually taking it in.

Baby’s have small stomaches and therefore eat smaller portions more often.

Ask your pediatrician. I was doing about 2 ounces every 3 hours at that time, day and night. My baby was tiny tho, I think 3-4 ounces is more average.

I used to cluster feed my babies closer to nighttime so they’d sleep longer. Worked pretty well, but then again my babies were naturally good sleepers, praise the good God. I can’t take full credit.

thats the recommendations on the box and I have spoken to a number of healthcare proffesionals and thats what they would recommend.
maybe the formula is different here in england.
he always finishes the bottle, except in the night..
which makes me think hes not really waking up cos hes hungry at night.
and I cannot feed on demand.
I know he has had 150ml , and he was anyway going 4 hours by himself during the day so im ok with the 4 hour gap.

you are meant to up their bottles as they get older.
otherwise theyl keep wanting to eat more often.

My baby is 7 weeks today. Ive had a lot of success following the method of 12 hours by 12 weeks. Your baby sounds like hes doing it on his own. Her method is baby eats every 4 hours during the day and slowing eliminating night feedings. She says to start once your baby is 9 lbs and is eating a minimum of 24 oz in 24 hours

That's about 9.5 lbs. The rule is 2.5 oz of formula per pound in 24 hours. So a 9 lb baby needs about 23oz formula in 24 hours. That's 3oz every 3 hours round the clock or 4 oz every 3 hours by day and skipping night feeds.

6 weeks is still newborn. Babies get 5oz bottles at 4-5 months. My 5 month old doesn't even always finish a 5oz bottle. You're meant to up their bottles slowly.

What does it say on the box? What formula are you using?
I bottle feed all my kids, I don't see how it's possible for a 6 week old to finish 5 oz.
