Is lemon or orange juice allowed?

I've seen some good recipes online for an Asian orange juice coleslaw. You toss in a tin of those cute little mandarin sections.

This recipe is perfect for Rosh Hashanah!

Crunchy Cabbage Salad:

1 large head cabbage, shredded (or a bag of pre-shredded)
2 large apples, diced

2/3 cup mayo
1/3 cup honey

Mix the mayo and honey together for a dressing.

Make your regular cole slaw salad recipe using lemon juice instead of the vinegar. Although I do like the options above with the Rosh Hashana feel.

Many have a minhag not to eat cabbage on R"H b/c it's considered a "bitter" food.

Make sure your coleslaw-loving guests eat cabbage this time of year.

(That's why there's a minhag of stuffed cabbage on simchas torah - b/c those ppl didn't eat cabbage since R"H)

The minhag in my no-vinegar-thru-hoshana-rabbah home was no mayo as well (any condiments with vinegar were verboten, including mustard and I wanna say ketchup).

But lemon juice was ok. And for some reason it was also the minhag to have sweet and sour carp for Rosh Hashanah made with lemon juice and sour salt.

Mayonnaise really shouldn't be avoided because it's not sharp like vinegar. Ask about it, see what you can do.

I love my homemade mayonnaise I make with immersion blender it's so good. Takes five minutes tops I'll share recipe of you want.

Substitute for vinegar is lemon juice and if you want a substitute for red wine vinegar mix lemon and red wine.

Sorry, OP, I missed that you davka want to make coleslaw. So I won't suggest the Mishpacha cookbook's cabbage muffins.

Make cole slaw and only serve it to the guests. Simple.

Or do the guests also have this minhag?

There’s no issue with foods that have vinegar as an ingredient. The issue is with sour foods and foods that contain a lot of vinegar.

I guess it depends on the minhag.

As I wrote above, the minhag from my childhood was that we did not use anything that contained vinegar, including mayo and other condiments.
