I always assumed riding a bike is a basic life skill that everyone learns when they are young, like swimming. ... isn't it?

Used to, haven't tried in twenty years. Raised MO. And now JPF/yeshivish. The girls here learn and ride when younger and taper off as they get older. My girls didn't really learn because dh wasn't home to teach them and I had all the other kids.

They say riding a bicycle is a skill you don’t forget. So I answered yes though I haven’t tried in 20+ years.

I didn't ride a bike as a young kid, but somewhere along the years I learnt how to, on my own. I surely remember riding one in the country during my high school years. Haven't tried again since then.

ETA-I taught my kids.

It wasn't allowed (for girls) in my neighbourhood growing up so my parents never taught me. Sad My brothers all rode bikes.

We did do an occasional school trip where we rented bikes in parks and rode but although I somehow managed to figure it out, I would not be confident riding one today. At this point in my life I am way too scared of falling. I guess if I needed to I would overcome this fear.

I did teach my daughters how to ride bikes.

Fwiw, my daughter was not able to learn to ride a bike. She is blind in one eye so I guess it made it impossible for her to learn to balance. She drives a car now with no problem.

Not allowed in many Chassidish communities. Even not for some boys but definitely not girls. Guess if you live in Monsey or BP you have neighbors who do but not in KJ or Williamsburg

Teaching your children to swim is a chiyuv; bike is not.

Of course! They make womens bikes BTW where its built in a way that your skirts doesn't ride up at all. Sounds more tzniyus than running or jogging to me.

It is totally acceptable for girls in Williamsburg to ride bikes. Just not Satmer girls. Girls from other schools do ride bikes. We rode our bikes till Bas Mitzvah age. I see many girls on rollerskates, I think it's not tzenuis for girls and we don't allow our girls to use their skates outside.
My girls learnt to ride a bike at about age 5/6.
I love to bike and I do so whenever we get the opportunity.

MO but don't know how to ride.

Very small family and an 8 yo cousin was niftar when he was run over by a car when he was riding his bike in 1949. There has been a family bike ban since (per my grandparents).
I bought my kids bikes but I am inept to teach and DH was never available.
Wish I had hired someone, but that ship has sailed as they are late teens now.

It's a shame not to be able to go out on a family outing in the country side if the girls can't join in. We hire bikes sometimes, it's great fun. We teach both boys and girls how to ride. Girls are allowed to ride in parks etc when older, not the done thing on the streets passed age 12+ in my community.
