Someone recently mentioned to me that she has "a lot of kids."
According to her age, it's highly unlikely she has 10 or 12....

I'm curious what this means, though I'm not one to ask for more info than is offered and I'm not too close with her.
So my question is, what's the least that "a lot" can be??

I always thought of "a lot" as more than 5. But I grew up in a community where most of the families were 3-5 kids so that will obviously influence my feelings

That's very community dependant. When I hear a lot of kids I think 10+ but I know that in some communities it's 15+ and in others it's 4+

I understand it's relative.
But would someone really say "a lot of kids" for 4 or 5 children?

6 and up I'd also think is a lot.

That's on who you ask?

1. Someone in mid 20's 5> is a lot
2. Someone in mid 30's 10> is a lot
3. Average secular family 3> is a lot

It's dependent on community and age. Having 4 kids at 23 is a lot. 4 kids at age 35 is not a lot imho.

could be she meant a lot based on the amount of years married- like 5 kids in 6 years is a lot!!

What community are you part of?
I’m part of a chassidish community in Monsey. While the average is 8, 6 is considered a nice size family.

I'm chassidish in Monsey too, but that's a very broad term.
In my neck of the woods, 6 is considered small, but not tiny. Most of my friends had 6 in their early 30s and didn't stop there.
9-10 average.

It has nothing to do with community for me. I grew up in a really large Family(by any standards, think Duggar type) so to me 6 is small.

Absolutely. I'm from a MO background and live in a DL/mixed community, I have 4 kids, and we're one of the larger families in the area.

We are MO, live in a mixed but young community, and we are older. The yeshivish young people are not finished having kids. We have 5 and I consider that a lot. Although my neighbor has 8. 5 is pretty average among the people who are finished.

Everything is relative .
To me 7 and up is a big family .
My neighbors and cousins that have 13+ think 7 is small!

I think over 20 is a lot. Wish I could have a baby every year.
