Did anyone here ever have a child diagnosed with ADHD
and than later discover it may really be anxiety?

can anyone tell me if they have experience with both with one
or the same child?

ADHD and anxiety can often go hand in hand so it can be both.

I've seen them comorbid. (Both be true). I've also seen it be a missed ASD diagnosis.

Best bet is to get a neuropsych evaluation. It's expensive, and sometimes takes a long time to get in, but way cheaper than what's involved when you don't have full and accurate information about what all the issues are.

Yes, my child has ASD and with it I believe strong anxiety. For various reasons they did additional testing later and added the diagnosis of ADHD-C. They didn't tell me they were evaluating for ADHD. I strongly feel the the correct diagnosis was anxiety and mentioned that to the evaluator when given the report. She said that it's certainly possible but they didn't evaluate for it. Regardless we decided to start with medicating for anxiety and it was extremely helpful. Our doctor said that ADHD and anxiety have so many overlapping behaviors that its difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is and it doesn't really matter what you name it.

I currently am dealing with this. He’s being treated for both. Zoloft for anxiety and adzenys for adhd. The adhd not resolving with drugs. Unfortunately the teachers are still complaining but the anxiety is way better.
He’s also on a dairy and gluten free diet and taking vitamins. We are using an integrative psychiatrist who prescribed medication but also works on healing a leaky gut and everything that goes along with that.

The problem with these diagnoses is that they are purely clinical and not based on biomarkers, so there is always going to be some element of arbitrary/subjective/human error - ness to them. If it were my child I would not focus so much on the label, more on the individual symptoms and their root causes. All neurological disorders will come in bundles because the brain and body is so complex and interwoven and when one system is out of balance it will throw others out of balance as well.

Can you share the name of your integrative psychiatrist? Have they looked into pandas or pans at all? Anxiety plus adhd sounds like classic pandas.

Dr magdolna saringer.
We started the whole process with looking into pandas. Aso was very mildly elevated so my pediatrician said we can treat with antibiotics and see if he responds but he didn’t at all. Either way we are treating from the inside out and doing all that to detox and heal his gut.

OP, anxiety is a very common comorbidity of ADD. So is OCD. It's quite possible to have both without underlying conditions although of course do your due diligence. But my DH and many other friends who have ADD all have anxiety with it. For that matter, I have nonverbal learning disorder and also have anxiety with it.

Very cool. Amazing that you are treating root causes. Is he responding to the interventions? We have pandas even though we don’t have an elevated ASO and it took us a while to find the right antibiotic that made a difference. Just saying this because infections are such an overlooked piece even in functional andintegrative practices and it’s worth looking into when diet and supplements aren’t cutting it.

How did you find the pandas if aso was normal?
We are seeing results with anxiety but not adhd. We only started a few months ago and we didn’t even do the detoxification yet so I’m being patient.

We had other symptoms that pointed strongly to pandas and the specialist we went to diagnosed based on symptoms. He said he sees many many kids who don’t have elevated titers and they still respond to treatment. Antibiotics (allopathic and herbal)completely eliminated our adhd symptoms.
