We have a BIG dog (a black flat coated retriever) who is 5 y o and a 7 month old kitten (and we have a tropical fish tank...)
Both myself and DH had pets as children.
I think it's great for kids to grow up around animals.

My dog weighs about 30 kg (about 65lbs)
Retrievers are generally less muscular than labs and don't weigh quite as much.
Mind you - if he ate as much as he wanted to, rather than the amount we give him- he would weigh lots more as he is extremely greedy!!!
He is TALL - can easily put his paws on your shoulders, and reaches ANYWHERE on the kitchen counters!!!

We have a big dog, small cat (he showed up one Erev Shabbos and by Monday we didn't have the heart to take him to a shelter, 2 turtles (these were NOT my idea) and a koi pond (all 21 fish have names).

Wow, a flat coated retreiver? You don't see those very often. I was watching an agility challenge on Animal Planet yesterday, and one of the senior challengers was a black flat coated retreiver. I remarked yesterday that I've never seen one IRL before!
We have a husky/lab/chow mix. He weighs around 60 pounds.

They are extremely intelligent and lively dogs who need lots of stimulation. Great fun but can be a handful!
My son calls him his pony-dog :-)

Our dog is so hyper and he's 8 years old!!! People STILL ask us if he's a puppy.
He loves to play keep-away with his raw-hide chips. He'll come up to us and toss the chip in the air, and keep doing that until we get up and run after him.

mannzymom - I really want to train our dog not to jump on people that come to the door. It's so frustrating to deal with a dog that goes completely berserk every single time someone comes to the door. Yesterday he went crazy everytime someone dropped off MM.
I would love to learn how to train him to stay away from the door when I go to answer it. Or at least not jump on people that come to the door.

Yup - meet Shadow and Sparky. Sparky was about 2 months old when I took that photo. He has grown a lot since then

Get a dog gate and keep him locked him in the kitchen :-)
