I want wall to wall.
Currently we have a very stained beige carpet so I’m thinking of something with a pattern, darker colors…

I did navy with other colors interspersed. We have gray couches and Robin’s egg blue walls.

Would you consider doing a vinyl or laminate floor? They're much easier to keep clean and fresh. Most people only clean their carpets once or twice a year, and stains can get set in. With a vinyl floor you can sweep and mop and it won't get that carpety musty smell. Just something to consider 😃

You can use carpet squares. They are used in commercial high traffic areas because you can replace individual squares if they become worn.

The other option would be to get some kind of tile or vinyl floor and then use area rugs so that there are cozy areas. Area rugs can be picked up and cleaned if necessary. And they are less of an investment than wall to wall so you can even replace if need be for not much money. You can even get a remnant from a carpet store and have them bind it for you which is not expensive.

I know that what you are suggesting is more in style but I just think it’s much cozier for kids to hang out in a carpeted room. I hope I won’t regret my decision.

Hard floor in a playroom gets very noisy! Carpet absorbs the sound of every bucket that is dumped....

Personally I like doing the hard floors and then covering with rugs. This way you have the cozy factor but still have easy options for cleaning/replacing when they inevitably get stained

That’s a good point. I have tenants in my basement… although my kids are not so young anymore and busy dumping toys, but they do hang out in the playroom a lot.. sit on the floor to play games… my youngest is 8 so he builds things sometimes… the noise level is for sure not as loud as it used to be. Hard to know what to do…
I did put in hardwood floors in my living room and dining room a few years ago.

When I moved house I went from laminate flooring to carpet and I hate it. It always looks messy and more claustrophobic even with one toy out, and I can't just sweep the floor or mop it. I can't afford to replace it at this point in time, but although it might be cosier to have carpet, it really isn't all that practical.

You can do laminate floors with a rug on top. I will add that laminate and vinyl are softer than hardwood floors, so it's not as huge a difference.

Laminate with Ruggable rug on top.
Ruggable is a 2 part rug. The top part fits into washing machine. Google it.
