Basement has a moldy smell (in Brooklyn)

How do I fix this, without getting taken advantage of, by someone that wants to do too big a job?

First you need to constantly run a dehumidifier. There will always be humidity in the air, eventually creating mold. Don’t shut it off.

After a few days of that the air will smell better. Then use a bright light to see where the mold is; if it’s on an object throw it away. If it’s growing on the wall or carpet, you’ll need to demolish and get new.

Ask a professional it could be from flooding, old water stuck somewhere left mold- it doesn't go away on its own...
damage under the floor or in the walls ?personally I'd double check with a plumber or mold removal cleaner
