My 8 week old hasn’t been nursing well. Every feeding is a fight. It’s not getting better as she gets older, which I hoped, it’s only getting worse.

I went to a LC who said she sees a tongue and lip tie but neither look bad enough that she’d tell me to run and get cut. She did notice/agree with me how my baby favors one side and said to have her looked at. I took her to dr golub and he said to do certain exercises with her to stretch her neck muscles. But he also wasn’t too impressed with the ties. He said if she is gaining well he’s not concerned.

Meanwhile every feeding is a disaster and I’m getting extremely frustrated. (This is my fifth kah and I nursed the other four successfully for 14-16 months each.)

I’m thinking of getting another Dr In the practice’s opinion on whether to get the ties cut, but I need to know who to see/who not to because they don’t believe in it. (I anyway probably need a referral- do I need an appointment for that?)

So I can call up and say I’d like to make an appointment with dr lapides to discuss my baby’s tongue tie?

will he look and feel and say if he thinks it should be cut?
Dr golub didn’t really feel inside her mouth much. The LC spent a lot more time feeling her palette and tongue etc.
(And at her two week visit with pa Kessler she didn’t even manage to look much at all because baby wasn’t cooperating... and I didn’t have this concern at that point)

I hate to say this but pediatricians really aren't trained specialists in tongue ties or lactation. A knowledgeable LC or feeding/oral motor SLP would be a better bet.

I know but some are more experienced with it than others.

Do you have someone to recommend?

Dr Sherman at shore dental clipped my babys
He does it by laser so less pain and recuperation time

I was told that he’s top but he for sure will cut. I want another opinion whether it’s needed, if it will help her issues before I do it.

I did it there too. My 11th baby. Nursed all of them before that until at least one yr old. This baby was gaining but very little. Each feeding was extremely painful. Unbearable if I want on motrin around the click. Lc and Dr gelfand in p.a(not sure if she still works there?)didn't think he was very tongue tied but I couldn't explain it any other way. Very good sucking.
I ended up giving formula for a couple of weeks and pumping. Had the tongue tie cut by shore dental care. Went back exclusively nursing once baby sucked well and started gaining nicely.

in my experience, most dr's in P.A. do not 'believe' at all that tongue tie is a thing.
maybe go to a diff pediatric dr office altogether

This is a sick appt but the lady I spoke to said she’ll ask her manager if she can schedule me already for it. She has nothing sooner. She didn’t call me back yet so I’m not holding my breath.

Any tie, even a small one, can cause restricted movement of the tongue, resulting in feeding issues. Pediatricians are not well versed in ties. If lc said she saw a tie, I'd go by that and have it taken care of asap. You and baby will most likely be happier and more comfortable. It's a very quick procedure.

Personally, I wouldn't go to Sherman. I'd go to the one of the experts, either Scott Siegel or Larry Kotlow. And make sure to follow up with bodywork.

As someone who went through this with multiple children, please read this:
https://betweencarpools.com/tongue-tie/
Pediatricians are not knowledgeable about tethered oral tissues (tongue, lip, cheek ties). Medical school does not educate them on it. They are only concerned about your baby’s growth, and your baby can still experience issues with oral function despite good weight gain.
Ties can impact oral function, which will manifest in various ways throughout the lifespan. When I was an infant, my mother had zero issues w/ nursing (in fact, I was the best and longest nurser out of all my siblings!). This was despite having tongue, lip, and cheek ties! But the issues eventually caught up-we use our mouths for more than just nursing.
My kids had the best, top pediatrician par excellence in town. And even he knew absolutely nothing about how to properly check for ties or how it affects oral function! When my baby had serious feeding issues, he thought a tie release was a waste of $ and time. Then he was like “Wow I stand corrected!” when we did the tie release at the right provider and my baby magically stopped choking and the severe reflux stopped too.

Op here with an update (I was searching for something and came across my old thread)
I ended up discussing it with dr braverman at a well visit and asked if he could give me a script for feeding therapy. And the rest is history. My baby got feeding therapy for weak muscles on one side of her mouth, and she nursed beautifully from then (started feeding therapy around 5 months) until she was 14 months old.

She had and has no tongue or lip tie, she just had very weak muscles on one side of her which made it very hard for her to nurse on one side.
