The other thread got me thinking on how much I can save by making homemade (and is usually tastier)

Besides for

yogurt , cheese , cooklies , cake , challah ,mayonaise.

What are other things can I make at home to avoid high costs ? (doesn't have to be only food items so if someone has a recipe for glasses solution please post)

Might seem obvious, but dips and salads.
Ices instead of popsicles.
Homemade or microwave popcorn tastes a lot better than snack bags imo.
If a household drinks a lot of carbonated drinks/soda, a sodastream may be worth investing.
A lot of people make their own cleaning solution out of various home supplies like dish soap + vinegar, etc.
(BTW, I don't see homemade mayo as being super cost effective esp with the rising cost of eggs. I'd rather buy generic and save money that way.)

Not just challah but all bread is both tastier and cheaper homemade.

Here’s my favorite bread machine recipe. You can leave out the herbs if you want a basic loaf. I swap in half whole wheat flour with no problem. I also strongly recommend the book “Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day.” I make a large amount of dough that lasts a couple weeks in the fridge and then just take a portion off and bake whenever we need a new loaf every couple days. I actually find this system easier than my bread machine and so do it more. We don’t view eating too much bread as a problem, but you can buy slicing guides on Amazon to consistently get whatever width slice you prefer.

1 cup water
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon dried rosemary
2 1/2 cups bread flour
1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Use leftover challah to make breadcrumbs.

It's easy to make your own tuna salad.

We make our own jerky and smoked salmon - lox.

Cottage cheese. You tip leben into a square of cheesecloth (or a new clean stocking) and suspend it from the faucet overnight. Then, after its finished dripping, remove from cloth and mix in your choice of seasoning.

I don't know if it would work with the leben you get in America. Don't try it with the chocolate flavoured ones!

You need a tortilla press to make tortillas. Homemade tortillas are delicious but I am not sure that making them really makes sense unless they are a staple in your home. Same with pita bread as you can make it at home but it takes some skill to make it versus regular bread.

I think it makes more sense to make dishes that use less expensive sources of protein like legumes and tofu because you can make these dishes very easily - make bean enchilada - Mission Tortillas are always on sale and are very cheap per tortilla.

How do you store it?

I had a lot of challah left over one week and made croutons and they were delicious but I have no idea how to store them to last more than a day or so... though it ended up not mattering cause my kids just ate them like chips.
