Are there any? Current plan is South Bend, IN, but I'm concerned about the wide gap in what's available for my kids' services and whether we can make it there financially if the only lower cost factor is housing (and car insurance). I'm not downplaying that at all - it's HUGE - but I need to also make sure I can afford life. I'm also concerned about medical options and availability of the specialists we need.

Not considering Rochester at this time due to lack of housing and no longer affordable, especially not for a single mother.

So... please list every community in NYS that I can consider:

- Lowest housing costs possible, please tell me how much to expect(I want to purchase if at all possible)

- School options and special ed if available in the Jewish school(s). If none, is the community in a decent enough public school district? Are there supplemental Jewish learning opportunities for kids?

- Open to different hashkafas as long as they're open to me. I'm trending back toward MO but after all the years I spent in all the places I spent them, I'm kind of a hodgepodge mix. I don't plan to continue covering my hair after I get my get.

Not cheap but Mill Basin in Brooklyn might be a good fit.

I don't know enough about the housing costs, but potentially research East Meadow on Long Island. Schools, shopping, etc. is all in Queens/Far Rockaway/Five Towns, but housing is considerably cheaper in East Meadow than in those communities. Still may not be cheap enough for you tho; I don't know actual costs.

If you're looking for South Bend level pricing, Mill Basin, Marine Park, Long Island, etc. are going to be WAY WAY WAY out of your budget. I struggle to think of any established Jewish community in NY that could work financially, but if it exists, it will be nowhere near NYC.

I have to agree with this. Unless you plan to rent? Maybe bayswater which is technically nyc, So you get all the nyc services. I think you would fit in and enjoy the nice crowd there..but if u plan to buy I can’t see how it would be affordable.. houses are prob in the 6-7 range maybe maybe 5s for something very small
Editing… prices seem to be higher than I thiught. More like 7-8

Maybe renting is best for you. In that case you have a lot more options.

If I end up in NYS then that's probably what I'll have to do. But after everything that's gone on in the past few years, I so badly desire the security of something permanent, and home equity.

I totally get you, I felt the same and had to wait so long to buy. But maybe for now it’s best to put that as the last priority.

I believe there is a Jewish community in Albany, though I know nothing about it
What about Buffalo?

I second looking into Bayswater. The people are so nice and you get nyc funding. I don't live there but have spent time there.

Buffalo in general is wonderful. It’s called the city of good neighbors for a reason! Housing prices are low and public schools in the northern suburbs like Amherst or Williamsville (where most of the Jewish community lives) are some of the best in the state. However, the frum community (as a subset of the overall Jewish community) is small and not growing. I’m not even sure the community day school still exists. There is a Young Israel, Chabad, and maybe one more MO shul.

It’s a shame Rochester can’t fit your budget because it seems like a good match otherwise.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

I'd say in NY state new york city can offer the BEST services people who leave and needed services regretted moving from nyc because they end up not approved for as much help as nyc provides or paying out of pocket...

Try a rental in NYC for the best services and assistance possible (in jewish environment) best of both worlds...

I'd say brooklyn or Queens are very good options

Thanks. I lived in Rochester for 10 years. There’s almost no housing to be found and taxes are crazy high in the frum community. The public schools are falling fast. Not an option.

How much are rentals in Queens?

Are there schools in Queens? I have no idea how I’d afford tuition even if the schools do accept my kids. Would I need a car?

In Kew Gardens Hills, a tiny apartment is at least $2,000/month. And public schools are almost all non-jews.

One thing I’m afraid about is that if the community is small and affordable you still might not have many services available, even though technically it’s NYS who provides the services. You can come to Brooklyn and have some of your rent covered by Hamaspik or one of the other big organizations because of your disabilities. And many other services they provide . But I’m not so sure Brooklyn is the right fit for you either. It’s not exactly the place that exudes warmth.
