A friend of mine told me if you want to know how many calories to eat to reach your goal weight, you take your goal weight and x by 10
So if your goal weight is
120 you should eat no more than 1200 calories
This is for CICO type diet
Is this true?

No. That's disordered eating.

ETA: 1200 is for a sedentary 6 year old.

It's simply not healthy to eat so little. That level of calorie deficit will have serious negative effects on your body, and your body will fight back by lowering your metabolism.

To lose 1 to 2 pounds per week, you'll need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you eat each day — or 3,500 to 7,000 calories per week.

Figure out first how many calories you need per day by filling out this calorie calculator. It will tell you how many daily calories your body needs to maintain your current weight. If you want to lose weight then cut your calorie intake by 500 - 1000 calories per day.

Its not disordered eating.
It actually makes a lot of sense.
I'm 140 now, trying to lose 10 lbs.
I definitely need less than 1300 calories in order to lose. If I eat more than 1300, I'll gain.

Children are still growing so they need more.

Dieting wrecks your metabolism, which is why you end up gaining if you eat a normal amount.

If you eat less than you'd be eating to maintain your goal weight, you will not be able to maintain your goal weight.

Counting calories is the best method to keep you from gaining weight once you lose it. It’s called responsible eating.

Do you mean I need to stick to that calorie count for the rest of my life or I’ll gain

Working out and gaining muscle will boost your metabolism and allow you to consume more calories without adding fat
