My baby is 2.5 months old, born full term at 7.5lb - He is now 7.13

My doctor has not been helpful so I'm looking for someone whose baby, did not seem to have any underlying cause for FTT and what they did.

Does he seem to be throwing up/spitting up a lot? Is he investing enough? Nursing? Formula? Maybe it’s time to thicken

He doesn't really spit up.

He nurses well and has an additional 10oz of either formula or my milk in a bottle, daily.

First thing I'd do is rule out tongue ties by a very literate provider.

Have you had your milk analyzed? Maybe it’s not fatty enough

How do I find soneone to check for a tounge tie?

I ordered the kit to have my milk tested - hope to do that this week.

My baby was failure to thrive and was/is always small. My pediatrician said to supplement with formula but baby refused. I had my milk analyzed and it was perfect! Even more calories than formula. He sent me to a GI (he said to give solids at five months!). He was almost put on a feeding tube (for no reason) but he gained enough to just eke by. I had him evaluated by an IBCLC who said he has a tongue tie. Got it revised with laser by a periodontist. Still no substantial weight gain. Went to a chiropractor (I was desperate!) who gave me a list of stuff to avoid but that didn’t help either. Went to an endocrinologist who said let’s give it time and see if he catches up. He so far did not and is almost 2. I took him to a world renowned growth specialist endocrinologist who said nothing is wrong BH but he will need help (I.e. growth hormone) to catch up, starting once he turns two. We have a geneticist appointment next week. Maybe they’ll have some answers!

Basically he is just small. Some kids are like that. If you can rule out any issues then you’ll feel more calm. Reasons kids don’t grow are:

1. Not getting enough calories (tongue tie, insufficient milk supply, feeding on a rigid schedule)

2. Not absorbing the nutrition (malabsorption issues, gi issues)

3. Burning too many calories (heart problems)

Have you tried consulting with a lactation consultant? A friend of mine had this and worked on nursing positions. It made a massive difference for her. Suddenly her baby started putting on weight

Go to the IBCLC website and search for a local provider. Don’t trust any random person who claims to be a lactation consultant. They must be certified.

The kit is great. It ready gives you peace of mind!

My baby is FTT, and he’s not my first with the classification. When what my pediatrician was telling me didn’t work, I made an appointment with a GI. He is still FTT, but BH he is slowly gaining weight. He was 6lb 10oz at birth, and now at 7m he is 14lb 7oz.
Under the GI’s guidance, I increased the amount of formula he gets per bottle and also started adding baby oatmeal.
Where do you live? Perhaps people can give you GI recommendations.
Also, you can message me if you want to talk or ask more questions or just want to vent/have an understanding shoulder to lean on.
Hatzlacha!!!

So you ruled out these 3 issues?

I've had kids with FTT, but they always came along with spitting up a lot. My baby now does not really spit, he smiles, and holds his head etc. I don't think its a GI issue. What kind of heart issues?

Thank you!

Was your baby spitting up? Overly a happy baby?

He may have silent reflux. I had a few kids with that. You can sometimes hear the reflux coming or being swallowed, but the baby doesn’t actually burp.

Hmm how do they diagnose that?

Failure to thrive should be taken very seriously.
It’s definitely strange that he’s eating well and not gaining. This usually happens when the baby spits up excessively or has other stomach issues.
The baby needs extra calories very fast right now in order to grow and develop properly.
Could the baby possibly have an infection? Was blood work taken?
I would call Dr. Shanik even if you are not using him. You really have no other choice since your dr doesn’t seem to know.
I had a similar issue with a newborn a number of years ago. When my baby was 9 weeks old he was very thin and lethargic. We had seen other dr’s but no one was sure what to do. I finally insisted on dr shanik checking my baby. (It wasn’t easy even a few years ago but Hashem helped) He gave simple advice that worked wonders. A few weeks later the baby filled out, round cheeks, finally grew out of his clothing and became alert and happy.
I’m telling you this because I really don’t think you should have walked out of the dr’s office without a solution. This is something that should be taken very seriously. I really feel like dr shanik can help you.

Not spitting up, projectile vomiting. Like need towels to clean it up, not paper towels. Like 1015 times a day, 2-3 times each time. It’s awful. Yet somehow, BH he is an overall happy baby. He will sometimes have some of his bottle, throw up, then have more as if nothing happened. He’s also very congested, since birth, which is from reflux.

Speak to a GI about it. But if it IS, you would likely hear something occasionally.

What was the advice he gave you?

My baby is not lethargic BH. He's up a lot and smiles and interacts. He hold his head nicely etc.

I use Dr. Gittleman and he did not recommend blood work at this time.

I've had kids like that.

That's what makes this so strange, he doesn't spit up really, so where is all the food going?
