I’ve taken a job as literature teacher in chassidish high school. I’m looking for a squeaky clean book that would interest 9th grade girls. Book should be very educational and high caliber writing. Can’t be related to anything Jewish as per school rules. I really appreciate your help!

I was thinking of that book. But needs to be something I can give lessons on. Not sure if the content has enough literary components and quotes to fill a semester with. But definitely one of my favorites!

A separate peace
The yearling
To kill a mockingbird
Roll of thunder, hear my cry

It's been years, so I don't remember the reading level, but The Velvet Room ,by Zilpha Keatley Snyder, was unique and good.

Arts roll has an edited literature book series for high school.
IIRC the 9th grade one has Around the World in Eighty Days. Some schools read The Miracle Worker but you should find out if they did it in elementary. The Pearl by John Steinbeck is another classic.

Can the author be Jewish but the book not be about anything Jewish? Or does it have to be a secular author.
Because I doubt the Yellow Notebook is particularly about major Jewish things

A lot of the books mentioned on this thread are--for a reason. It's hard to find age appropriate great literature that is 'squeaky clean' as that means ignoring a significant piece of the human experience.

"Running out of time" By Haddix! Hands down the most fascinating book that is also one of the cleanest. The story is captivating yet so clean!

Forbidden topics include any relationships, or are Victorian-esque courtships allowed?

How about Christianity? Magic? Swine?

I'm kind of horrified at the level of some of the books mentioned. I hope that the posters are just not familiar with the books, not that that's the level of 9th grade chassidish girls. Try echo mountain by Lauren wolk, historical fiction (during the great depression) and excellent writing.

The City of Ember

Also came to recommend Running out of Time, by Haddix. Saw another poster suggested it too

Yes some books mentioned are definitely not for 9th graders. However English is not their first language and many girls have limited access to English literature. But echo mountain seems amazing as I love historical fiction. Thank you!
