Looking for day trips in Maryland that are not Baltimore or DC. Good for a family of kids. Also are there any areas that are unsafe that should be avoided?

There's a great free zoo in the Washington/Silver Spring area
There's a free living history museum in Havre de Grace, Maryland, if you're into that sort of thing. I think it's the Steppingstone museum. It's on the way to Baltimore from the tristate area.
There's a park with literally giant slides near Silver Spring. Maybe someone else knows what it's called.

Great Falls (in VA but at the edge of DC so about 45 min from Silver Spring and Baltimore)
