This is my first year doing Tisha B'Av all the way. I know the custom is to have the last meal of bread and/or egg dipped in ashes. My question is: What ashes?? Where do you get ashes from? What kind of ashes are safe to eat?

Do you follow this custom? If so, how do you do it, what ashes do you use?

Literally anything. We usually use ash from matches.

This year my DH took paper towel sheets, put it in a foil pan, and put it carefully on fire with a lighter. We then dipped our egg a tiny bit in the ashes.

I just wanted to add that watching the paper towel on fire gave me a feeling of churban. Like how much fire was on this one paper towel consumed, imagine the Bais Hamikdosh in flames.

(That's not the point of the ashes but it ended up being a source of connection to me this year.)

I burn toast and scrape off the ash.

Id prefer not to use non food items like paper. Its probably full of chemicals.

We don’t do ashes, and I don’t do bread. We had some people eating with us who did ashes. I think they burned a piece of paper.

We burned a up a few sheets of nori — that’s the seaweed part of sushi. We prefer to start with something that’s a food.

We burnt toast in the toaster and scraped off the black and dipped bread and hard boiled eggs in the black ashes
