How can I teach my almost 2 yo to play on his own independently, even for a short period of time?

Say 5 minutes so I can put supper in the oven..

Good luck. Depends on the kid.

I've found it works best if I can set them up with something, play with them for a minute, and then have them continue on their own. Even better if it's somewhere they can see me and I can keep talking to them.

Or letting them "help" if there's a way to do that, so they don't feel deserted. Like while I get dinner going, they can put the plates on the table. Or the trivets. My kids like putting out trivets at that age.

I dunno about five full minutes, though.

I try doing this but he's literally back within a minute.

I like the idea of him "helping" me with putting out plates, thanks!
