It’s Elul, and I feel the atmosphere of the time. I want to do teshuva and be close to God but I am so afraid. It is hard to separate my relationship with Him because I see him as a father and my own father was not well mentally and violent. So I learned to hide and avoid him as much as possible.

Perhaps you can view Hashem as someone who loves you. Not a father. Ani Lidodi vidodi li. Hashem really loves you. It doesn’t even need to be authoritative. Lovers should be equals.

Read ki anu amecha and choose a relationship that you can identify with and relate to.
