in heimishe classics. yellow book.
made it time.
batter was extremely runny. nothing left on whisk when removed from mixer,
it says 1.5 cups hot water in the recipe. I did boiling. could this have caused it or is the batter meant to be this way?

It's a moist cake. I usually bake it longer than indicated.
