Wondering how to take it, seems like the regular thermometer I have doesn’t work for newborns.
Also if my baby (6 months) does have fever, what do you do?

Now that there are so many options out there. I would hate to use a rectal thermometer.
I know it’s supposedly most accurate but it doesn’t really matter to me if my kid has 101 or 101.8.

This is the chart we use for how to gauge the level of the fever.
For taking temp, the most accurate is a rectal thermometer. Most baby thermometers will have a bump or line on it, that indicates how far in it should go. We put on a disposable cover and dip it in Vaseline, before sliding it in. (It may take 2 people if you child wriggles a lot or tries to fight it.)

You can give it 24h and see what other symptoms develop. I’d consider over 102 high, over 105 an emergency.

Regular thermometer under the armpit. No way I'm putting anything in my kid's rectum.

my favorite ear thermometer ever - put it in the ear, push the button, and the results are ready in 1 second. other ear thermometers take longer and babies and sick kids don't hold still.

then call the pediatrician with next steps once you know the temperature.

Refuah shelaima!

My rectal thermometer is flexible. She didn’t seem to notice when I put it in.
She was also a month old, so the details were important.

A six month old is not a newborn and does not need a rectal thermometer unless specified by a doctor.

Love my ear thermometer.
When I used to do rectal, it was such a hassle and only checked temperature when I was sure kid has fever.
Now with the ear thermometer, it’s so easy so I don’t think twice
Also have the Braun one from Amazon

We have an ear thermometer, which is supposed to be more accurate than putting it in their mouth, or forehead. I can't deal with the thought of sticking a thermometer up and do it rectally.
Although I find I can usually guess whether they're feverish by how hot their body feels and the back of the neck. I might not know the exact degree, but I know when it's too hot.
