Most of mine needed a 3 they were somewhat above average size and head size but not huge. One of them was on the smaller side and wore a 2 for a long time.

Every child is different, you need to try it on. Ikippa may not even look good on your child, it's best to take child to the store & try on different one's.

My tiny kid with a flat head needed a 1 but grew out of it after few months. He wears 2 now and is 4.5 his head shape needs small size. My other kid who is 3 wears a 3

I find it depends on the community. In my chassidish community nothing less than a 3, for sure. But I have seen upsherin boys or older in litvish communities with size 1 or 2.

It has to do more with the boys head size & shape, then with community....
The chassidish circles that are makpid and larger kappels, generally don't wear ikippah.

My son started with a size 1, his head is quit small. He’s turning 6 now and he’s a 2.
