My guess is a bad case of scoliosis. LOL

(I think it's actually a type of hat with the front brim bent downwards)

Yes.

Does bent down mean a black hat with the brim forward, when not referring to being hunched over?

ok, I was the first anon poster in that thread to ask what "bent down" meant. I posted anon because I felt like an idiot not knowing what that meant! but nobody else knows either! now I really want to know what it means!!!

Bend down is a hat that the front bends down. Cassandra can go to sleep a little smarter tonight then she was yesterday.

btw - I also asked in that thread (anonymously - still afraid of being an idiot) if it referred to a hat brim.

lol...now I understand why I didn't know...because in chabad, practically EVERYONE wears their hat that way!

ok I'm a BT, and never before becoming frum heard...... says over..... brings down...... why is it ok to mangle English like this?

I know what says over and brings down mean, but how on earth did they come about? Someone decided that "cites" or "explains" wasn't frum enough?

Why is it a matter of frumkeit? Most of those "offensive" phrases are just translations of Yiddish/Hebrew. It's not a conscious decision to "mangle English" Rolling Eyes

, it's just the way people speak in a given community, especially when the native language is not English.

Its the literal translation from the yiddish terms.

Another example is using the term "by" as in "I stayed by the Cohen's house". It is grammatically correct in Yiddish, but in English it should be, "I stayed at the Cohen's house".

Unless, of course, you stayed at some other location near the Cohen's house.

That one sounded very strange to me when I first started hanging out with frum people. Especially teens -- it sounded strange to hear young people speaking in a way that reminded me of my Grandma.

right, but I explained it as the bent up being the chassidish way, and I forgot to exclude chabad.
