What is not too far from Pico/Robertson or Santa Monica area of Los Angeles and what is there to do there?

What is your definition of "not too far" 
The City and County of Los Angeles are very large and so getting to a "quaint town" would be at least a day trip by car.
What do you want to do in this "quaint town"
Solvang is a quaint Danish town which is popular with tourists but is a bit of a shlep since it is further than Santa Barbara.
Some of the beach towns to the South like Laguna are interesting to walk around in.

Definition of quaint is not too crowded, more simple people.
Walk around, enjoy scenery/water, hoping for some shops that might be interesting and have some crafts. Possibly an activity not sure what-aquarium, boating, etc.

A couple options that come to mind are the Naples canals just under an hour to the south. We stopped there to break up the drive to San Diego, but we loved the Venetian canal vibe so much we spent much longer than we had planned. Another option is Oxnard about 1.5 hours to the north, which has the amazing Tierra del Sur kosher restaurant and Herzog winery. There's also boating in Oxnard, though you'd have to check what's open in January.
