I’m learning about the connection now and looking for guidance please.

My son checks off all the boxes and I’d love to fix it. Not sure how to proceed though.

Any help is greatly appreciated

I can’t say I know much about the topic, but I saw Mel robbins hosted a breathing expert - Patrick McKeowen, about overcoming the tendency to breathe from the mouth.

I recommend staying seeing it in youtube, because there are real demonstrations. You probably can find more info from him - books, etc.

No advice, but thanks for bringing it up. Haven't heard of this before, but ds has severe adhd and always has been mouth breathing, especially at night. I have to look into this.

The way to fix mouth breathing is to address whats causing it. It's usually multifactorial and multi layered with a lot of chicken or egg kind of causation, but causes include tongue tie, improper resting tongue posture, narrow jaws, high palate, deviated septum, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, chronic congestion, weak oral muscle tone, and then plain old habit.

You would need to address any and all of these potential causes. People who can help identify the causes and correct them are airway informed ENTs, myofunctional therapists, airway informed orthodontists. Osteopaths, chiropractors and craniosacral therapists are also good professionals to have on your team.

He has some great books on the benefits of mouth breathing on overall health

Your should probably start with a myofunctional therapist. Unless DS cannot physically breathe through his nose for 3 minutes in which case you should start with an ENT. He will probably still need the myofunctional therapy after that though.

Sone thing else to think about along these lines…

“Considering the complex relationship between ADHD and sleep problems, the recommendation to screen for OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) and other sleep problems among persons being assessed for ADHD should be upheld.”

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38230976/

Relevant for all snoring patients with focus problems!

This is really interesting. 2 of my kids are mouth breathers. No adhd but I'd love to address it when they're still young because of the other health issues it can cause. Where do I start?

CPAP is just a bandaid and can cause lung damage after long term use. I understand it's popular but there are underlying issues causing this like dark blue mentioned.

Any recommendations in the Brooklyn area? Do most of these people take insurance?

Thank you. How much can I expect to shell out to treat this?

Thank you. Hope I don't need to empty my pockets for this. On average how long does it take to see improvement?

It really depends on what you have going on but it can be quite the journey
