maybe the baby is teething.

maybe the baby has an ear infection but the antibiotics aren't working yet because it takes time.

maybe the baby just wants to play, even though it's late at night.

maybe the baby is frustrated that he doesn't have the words to say that he's not tired.

maybe he just wants to snuggle and be held.

maybe he's about to fill his diaper.

maybe his mommy just realized Pesach is around the corner and is making a to do list instead of holding him all night long.

maybe his mommy decided that tonight he is going to sleep in his own bed because she's sick of waking up with his diaper blowouts in her bed.

Maybe he's in his mommy's arms RIGHT NOW being offered a pacifier or nursing but would rather screech his little head off for 45 minutes and the next day, the neighbor who shares an apartment wall says to the tatty, "mazel tov, I *heard* you had a baby"

Because he doesn't know why, but he does know if he cries during the night mummy is worried he will wake up his siblings so she will hold him regardless of the time.
And if I'm that neighbour and it was nightly it wasn't only the baby that was crying at 4am looking out the window....
