You're making 2 ponies you mean?
Personally I make one pony at the back of the head and a clip like a yamuka clip on the front on the side.
But if you're making 2 ponies how can you not make a part in between?

If you’re making pigtails or pigtail buns, then of course you should spilt the part and make it even with a comb
