How early can/should one starting looking for a gown? My DD just got engaged and we're overwhelmed trying to figure out what to start with first.

I have a very different view on wedding gowns. My parents, who are not people of means got me a magnificent and expensive we’d gown. I am already a grandmother multiple times over and the gown still gives me pleasure, and I still thank my mother on a regular basis for giving me one night to feel magical.

my daughter got her dress from ehernfeld gemach. Between rental, alterations, cleaning, and Ubers from a different part of Brooklyn, the gown cost total was about $750/850.
I probably should have looked at other options…
For $1000 I could have rented for her and included all that in the price.
I also came from out of town to help her, and that felt like another expense.

Where can you rent a wedding gown for that price?

What's the timeline involved? Some gemachs aren't open till after Pesach now. How much time do we need to find, alter, etc? I'd like to at least try a gemach first, but can we wait till after Pesach to start? Wedding is in Sivan

I got a beautiful gown from a gemach in Far Rockaway about 5 years ago. It think it was $100 plus dry cleaning. I think the bustle was ripped so I paid to get that repaired too. The selection was pretty limited there, but I happened to find exactly what I was looking for in exactly my size, so that worked out.

From the Satmar gemach in Boro Park. I spent $650 including alterations. They include a veil and headpiece.

That's a gemach- not a rental.

I got mine from Augenbraun. Last year the prices were 1800 for new, 1450 for worn once (which is what I got) and 1200 for worn 3+ times. (I think they rotate their stock pretty often so once a gown has been worn like 4-5 times they will sell/donate it.)
Loved the service, they did whatever I wanted to the gown. For instance I am pretty short and I did not want them to hem the gown, I wanted a clean cut bottom. They did it happily.

My friend recently got a gown from a gemach in Teaneck. It's a relatively new gemach but had some really nice pieces .
