The topic of Shabbos robes in shul sparked some really heated debate today. Some were against it, some not...but so many people had strong feelings about the matter.
Yet, this is not Halacha. No matter how strongly you may feel - and I think the same way - that robes in shul are wrong, no one can claim that this is halacha.
But there is one thing that is Halacha, and that sometimes gets neglected.
The halacha states clearly that when attending shul for Megillas Esther, one is required to wear Shabbos clothing. This is not merely "something nice to do" it's halacha.
Yet you'll often find people show up in shul wearing:
Clown suits
Cowboy outfits
Fireman's hat
Pilot uniform
I'd be curious to know why this halacha is so neglected...

I never heard of this halacha and I consider myself fairly educated and went through the BY system.
So Im sure that's the answer.

Why is everyone so intent on getting everyone to be like them? If you want to get rid of your smartphone, great. If you want to wear shabbos clothing to shul, wonderful. But why are we all so concerned with what everyone else is doing?

If I was unknowingly doing something improper, I really hope someone would care enough to let me know.

It is a real Halacha to wear Shabbos clothes to Megillah. Dh and I both do. (Our kids are young and wear costumes)

I learned that IF YOU ARE NOT WEARING A COSTUME you should wear Shabbos clothing.

(My understanding is that a costume IS Yom Tov clothing on Purim.)

The article says that "there is a custom to wear Shabbat clothes on Purim." It doesn't say a halacha. It says a custom.

The men who are not in costumes are definitely dressed in Shabbos clothes on Purim.
I didn't think it's because of halacha, just in the spirit of yom tov!
Women don't want to get their shabbos clothes smeared in chocolate and hamantashen. Just not practical for that type of day.

Can always change after Megillah
Or wear washable Shabbos clothes

Purim is no different than Shabbos or yt in terms of me getting dirty

Adults in my community wear shabbos clothes on Purim. Kids wear costumes and there's no halachic issue with it

People got annoyed bc OP of that thread decided robes were not considered appropriate according to her standards for shul/shabbos.
Most people wear who wear a robe on shabbos, only wear it on shabbos. And some people wear Maxi dresses bc that's whats in style. It was a bit off putting for her to come along and rebuke people for wearing their definition of "shabbos clothes"
