DD is 5' but quite large on top and not skinny at the waist but narrow shoulder, short arms, short waist, etc. If not for her chest, she would be in a small/medium. having such a hard time! please give me ideas of what to look for (early 20's). she is so beyond frustrated!

A good seamstress. You buy what fits the torso and take in everything else.
Sometimes I feel like every piece of clothing I own needs to be altered.

but often if it fits at the chest, the entire rest of the shirt/dress is huge and hanging. How would we know how it will look and if we will like it if altered?

Non Jewish stores have large petite size. Maybe try that .

I’m also short very large chest and I have to tailor everything I buy even tees. Find a good tailor and they’ll fix exactly where u need it. The only problem is it’s not cheap. I found dresses to be the easiest tailor

we already have good bras...
The issue with bringing pins, etc is that I have no idea about how or if something can be taken in well and look good......
I agree that maybe alterations are the way to go, but it is so hard to know how it will look and if it will flatter once done - or am I wrong?
