Any ideas how to marry off a child when there really is no extra money? Are there any national g'mach's that assist?

it depends where you live.
some towns can offer alot of help
do you have jewish friends that live near you?
you can ask people to host the pre wedding events in their homes
if you need to buy furniture for the couple, craigs list on line has amazing deals
where people sell furniture for very reasonable prices and you can
get very nice things.
try to make wedding as simple as possible
for centerpieces you can do a small candle with petals around it
have a 1 piece band
you can do the dessert table yourself
buy from store or bake and have waiters set it up

In most cases, people are a lot happier to donate actual goods than money. Do you have a list yet? Many big communities have plans where each side pays their half and then you get everything from the plan.
