Parve chicken soup mix: to flavour couscous or fish.
(Parve) mushroom soup mix: for pasta sauces (creamy or tomato).
Tomato soup mix: to drink (at work only).

Streits makes a soup mix- really a soup kit. The split pea version has nothing artificial, no msg, no fat and tons of fiber. I add sliced carrots, frozen peas, etc (just to make me feel like I am actually the one who cooked the soup) but it doesn't need.

When dd's come home from school and there is hot, thick soup that took virtually no energy to make, I am a real hero

No. Never. I believe some have MSG in them and I prefer the taste of homemade soups.

No, never as I think they are really bad for you. I can taste soup with mix in it because it "bites". Don't know how else to explain it. I once complained to the chef at a hotel we were staying at. For what we paid, I told him, I expect decent soup. He explained, truthfully, that they can't get that home-made taste without spending a fortune for the right ingredients, so the mix takes the place of "real" flavor. Blech.

I avoid them because most of them have MSG. On a related note, I made a wonderful chicken matzah ball soup from scratch and my guests LOVED IT. You cannot replace the authenticity of real chicken broth made from boiling real chicken!!

The only soup mix I use is Goodmans onion soup mix. I use it for many recipes, I think its one of the better ones out there.

I don't use it when I make soup, but my dh makes himself soup all the time with them. He only uses the mix and hot water. I usually just use it for kugel.

I use parve chicken soup mix in tuna casserole. I use mushroom soup mix either for soup or mushroom gravy. I use onion soup mix for chicken and onion soup- rarely. I rarely but sometimes use soup mix in rice. I use chicken soup mix in home made terriyaki sauce.
I try to get msg free soup mix.
I dont use chicken soup mix in chicken soup- blech...
