DS is still too young for school but just curious how much people in NY pay. What do you need to qualify for scholarship? Like if you own a home but can barely pay your bills, would you get a scholarship still? I don't own a home yet so it doesn't directly affect me but I want to prepare myself. Also, if you have more than one child does the price per child go down? Are bpys schools generally more expensive than girls schools?

I'm not in NY and no longer have children in regularly schools (only post HS yeshivos), but in our large city, the scholarship committee policy was pretty simple. One was expected to pay up to a certain percentage of his income in tuition (no, sorry, I do not remember what the percentage is/was). In cases where there were unusual expenses that did not allow someone to pay that proportion, appeals could be made and compromises were normally made.

Have you heard if it is the same process in NY? BH - we are making a nice living (not rich, but comfortable) - but we are saving for a house, and IYH if we have more than a couple of kids, between mortgage payments and tuition, there is not enough money.

Thread inspired by the other tuition thread/poll, because I thought it would be better to make similar comparisons, ex - not Israel (where tuition is minimal) to NY.

I think it depends a lot on what kind of schools you are talking about. Even in my out-of-town city the info I gave was accurate for the more yeshivsh schools. It is my understanding that the the more MO school gave less scholarship $.

It would depend if you refer to a chassidish cheder, a yeshivish school, MO, etc. You should ask everyone to post what type of school their info refers to.

I suggest editing your poll to include more numbers above 10 grand.

Do you really think that elementary school costs more than $10,000. I heard it is around $8,000 - $9,000.

sv, there are definitely schools that cost more than 10,000. I know a school that costs 15,000- 18,000 a kid depending on the grade.

The NY area schools I know of range from $15,000 to $23,000, or thereabouts, per kid, so yes, they really do cost more than $9000.

That's ridiculously high. I just have two questions: 1) Do a lot of students get "breaks"? 2) Are the teachers paid well and is there money for supplies?

I don't know how much the teachers make; they've never shared that personal information with me. Most of them appear to live decently. They receive huge breaks on their own kids' tuition. Many students to receive aid.

At least until junior high, there are 2 teachers in every room at all times, plus resource room and enrichment teachers, a science teacher, and specialty teachers (art, music, gym). Every classroom has a smartboard. Books are in good condition, and there's no shortage of them. Kids bring their own notebooks, etc, but I've never heard of a teacher wanting for anything. Lunches are provided.

Now I'll ask, how does a school survive on less? There are 15 to 20 kids per class. At $15,000 tution, that's $300,000 per class. Taking from that books, maintenace, administrative expenses, insurance, fuel costs -- you're probably at 1/2 of the tuition. That doesn't leave a lot to pay the teachers. At a tution of $5000 that some people have mentioned, that's only about $100,000 per class. That would give 4 teachers a pittance of a salary even without administrative and other expenses. I don't see how they do it.

We are MO and DD goes to an MO school.

She is in preschool now and we pay something like 5k for the year.

When it comes to elementry I will be expecting to pay something like 10k.
I will say though, that her school has excellent facilities, resources, and great teachers!

I thought that range was for high schools , but I guess I was wrong.

My cousins go to a mo school that is 18k per kid for kindergarten. We'll prob. send to a school (if we stay in the area) around 6k-7k. If we move however, it's around 12k

As far as I'm concerned, that's 19k. I don't count the little games they play with *scholarship funds* or the like to try to give people tax breaks. If I have to pay it, its tuition.

we pay 9000 for a 5 yr old in kindergarten. The other school in the area is 11,000 for kindergarten and 13,000 an up from 1st grade through 8th.

My children go to a Modern Orthodox New Jersey elementary school. Each tuition is about $14,000 and then there is a $7000 (per family) scrip requirement. When we lived in New York City (not Manhattan), tuition was significantly more than it is in New Jersey.
