I had a friend named Maya who spells her name: מי-ה, meaning from Hashem.

As far as I read, it is a version/nickname of Miriam.

As I said above, I know someone (Israeli) who does use it as a Hebrew name.

from some name websites:

MAYA Jewish: Derived from Hebrew מַיִם (mayim) "water"

Maya is also a modern Hebrew name, probably also a variant of Greek Maia, but maybe related to Maayan (spring) and to the Aramaic word for “water”.

even in wikipedia: Hebrew, the name Maya (מַיָּה in Hebrew) is a short form of "ma'ayan," meaning "spring" or "brook." Maya, in Hebrew, also means ("מלחמת יום הכיפורים") - "The war of Kippur" (in Judaism).

seems to be a relatively new up and coming Jewish name though

I find a source for Maya in 1357 http://www.s-gabriel.org/names......html

I do wonder how it would be spelled.

In Hebrew, it's was used for Milchemet Yom Hakippurim (YK war in 1973). Mem Yud Heh. People still use it because it's pretty.

It is Jewish.

My Yeshivish-oriented sister used this for my niece. Mem aleph yud heh. Their Yeshivish Rav gave them the spelling. If it weren't a "Jewish" name, he would have said so.

My MO cousins used it for their daughter.

I personally think its a beautiful name. Its also a refreshing change.

My daughter's name is Maya and it is most definitely a Jewish name! We asked a Rav about using it and he said it is perfectly fine! We love it :-)

MAYA is a modern Hebrew name after the month of May (Kolatch, Alfred J. 1984. The Complete Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names. Middle Village: Jonathan David. 366).

All these make sense:
Mei-Hashem - from Hashem.
Aramaic for water (see Chad Gadya) (and Torah is compared to water...)
the month of May in Israel is pronounced like the first syllable in Maya

I know of it being used as short for Malchut Yehuda. Why would anyone want to name their daughter after a war (I mean to each their own - but seriously)?
I would go for Miya if I were thinking of from Hashem - sort of like Mia Farrow. Which is kind of cool. Although, I don't really like name children with this meaning (but it does sound cool).
