Hello everyone!
My dear neighbourg offered us a very old painting of a Rabbi /Cantor.
We would love to know who he is.
Do any of you very resourceful ladies have a clue of how to get about this task.

Thank you so much

P.S. I have a picture of course of the painting if anyone can help! Yes

Proceed with caution. We eventually figured out that the old rabbi in the painting we were given is ... St. Augustine. Who knew that St. Augustine had a long beard and wore a large kippa!

can you make out the artists name in the lower right crnr? (and the year can also be helpful, too).

I'm having a hard time seeing it clearly.

It may not nec be payos just part of the beard and the tallis - looks like it could be a scarf (it doesn't go over the shoulders- from wot I can see)

Hope u get ur ansa soon, and hopefully it is a rabbi or cantor - or just a good yid!!

what makes you think this is a rabbi or cantor as opposed to stam reb yid or even reb not a yid at all but an artist's model who posed for the pic? To me this looks like (hope I don't offend anyone) typical kitschy sentimental "art" that's sold to people trying to introduce a bit of ethnic flavor into their home, even if it is "very old". How old? 60 years? 160 years? 660 years?

They paint pics like this today, too, and they use models, not real public figures. by "models" I don't mean guys who are with the Wilhelmina agency who pose as holy men between gigs prancing around in Kenneth Cole undies, I mean stam guys, often somebody they know or their landlord's nephew's brother-in-law who happens to have the "look" they want. Someone dh knows posed for this kind of picture, and not only is he neither a rabbi nor a cantor, he's left of center MO! But he does have a beard, slightly graying, and with a tallis over his head, he looked the part. It was just a head-and-torso portrait, so he didn't even have to change out of his jeans.

Not that this couldn't be a real portrait of a real rabbi or cantor, I'm just curious why you seem so sure it is.
