We soak a whole bag then divide it into smaller portions and freeze.

lechatchila I soak them for at least 4-6 hours.
bidieved I once read that you can put the beans in a pot, cover with water, bring to a rapid boil for one minute then shut off the heat, leave for one hour, then drain thoroughly. This has a similar effect to a long soak, it's great when I forgot to soak them.

I heard that soaking reduced the ummm, risk of flatulence from them.

Before I got to bed on Thursday night, I put them in a covered container in water. If I forget, I do the quick soak that it has on the package.

I finally made my first really good, easy, procrastinator's cholent.
1-Dump frozen somewhat identifiable meat from the back of the freezer into crock pot.
2-Place 1 cut up onion in pot (optional and I used the piece left over from the tuna I made for lunch)
3-Open and drain 2 cans of baked beans, add to pot (This week I used one Bush's one Hienz)
4-Open and drain 1 can of Chickpeas, add to pot
5-Open and dump (with some of the water) 2-3 cans of whole potatoes into pot
6-Add barley (I did rinse it) to pot
Cover and cook

My mother usually soaks them overnight and if she doesn't have enough time- she boils them twice or three times changing the water in between. And that is actually what I do, because I never remember to soak them on time! Not sure if it works, but it makes me feel better to do it...

I soak overnight.
The reason for soaking is that some beans - especially kidney beans, have properties that are poisenous if they are not either soaked for 8+ hours or boiled for 4+ hours.
Since I do my cholent in a crock pot on low they are never being boiled so I soak them.

I've also heard that if you don't have time to soak the beans, you can boil them and then soak them for an hour with some baking soda. I have an OCD friend who soaks them overnight and then boils them and soaks them with the baking soda.
