I have my candles on side diningroom dresser with a mirror. Why is this not allowed, I was told, having lights reflected in Mirror?

Dear Amother who launched this thread,
I, too, need to know this...I didn't know there was even a concern with this...no one who has come by us for Shabbos has ever said anything! (I broke from the USCJ movement, so alot of this type of thing I'm especially clueless about!) I have always thought the reflection was beautiful, and love the way the flames' reflections dance around the room! It makes Shabbos so festive-feeling! I had no idea that this is a Shabbos faux-pas, either! What Rolling Eyes Help Question

I don't know about the candles themselves...you're not supposed to daven or make a bracha in front of a person's picture or a mirror b/c it gives the impression that you are praying to the picture or to yourself.

One is not supposed to daven Shmoneh Esrei in front of a mirror. What does it have to do with candle lighting? And you pronounce brochah with closed eyes and face covered with your hands? I will be more then surprised if one can not light candles in front of a mirror.

Ahhh...so much for Martha Stewart's suggestion on how to add depth to the room by strategically-placing it how and where I did! LOL! Very Happy

Oh, somebody just go and ask a rabbi, please, and post back so everyone will know a real answer Exclamation

Otherwise, 50% of imamothers with this question will still remain sure its okay, when its not

OR

50% of imamother will needlessly be rearranging their furniture Rolling Eyes

As soon as I typed the above, I looked to the clock and had to go pick up the kinderlach from school/preschool! I asked the rebbetzin (Lubav) and there is no prohibition about this because one's hands are covering one's eyes and face to make the brocha, the brocha is not being done "into" the mirrored reflection of oneself, and a wall hanging of any kind is not an issue, either. (I did not have time to ask for a reference, as cars would've been honking behind me in line!) Hope this helps!

I was told, years ago, by a wife of a Chasidishe man. He was very learned, especialy in kabbalah, zohar. I would realy love a reference from a Rav now though. Will ask my Rav.
