As I'm due with a boy in a little bit, I want to stock my freezer with stuff to eat at a shalom zachor, so that way we don't have to buy things last minute.
Can you give me suggestions of the type of stuff to make? I prefer yummy but not insanely fancy stuff, no frosting or 10 pot cakes or whatever...

Like chocolate cake. I have a recipe.
Chocolate chip cookies.
I'm freezing some cooked chickpeas.
What other stuff can I make at home that will freeze decently, to serve at a shalom zachor?

If no margarine, thats even better, but I realize most stuff do have margarine so I won't complain if it has.
If you can provide recipes for what you suggest I make, I prefer that as well.

You can buy the drinks & papergoods.
You can make Peanut Butter Circles, which is quite fancy & yummy, but not icing.
Rice Krispies Treats

Also things like cookies I found were better because people took, where as cakes no one wanted to take the first slice. It's good to have things that can be frozen again because I found by ours people brought a lot of food and ate very little, so I had lots of baked goods left over. Remember it will start late after people have had a big meal, so they might not eat much. And you might not even be there in the end.

I always thought it was snacks ... but if you want to cook bbq a ton of chicken wings - goes well with beer and chickpeas ... make dips and buy chips ... bake some goodies and pray it wasn't an umbilical cord siting ... Wink

I made and froze Babkas.

Why freeze the chick peas? Just buy a couple cans of cooked chick peas that Friday and that's it.

What about squares - brownies, choc. chip etc.

(BTW, I was supposedly a boy, my mother bought a freezer in advance of the shalom zachor and stocked it full - and here I am now on Imamother Smile.)

[We had so much baked goods left over from our Shalom Zachar that we told the cook at my husband's yeshiva - where we made the bris - not to order Danishes. My MIL re-made the cake platters for the bris and it went over very well as well as saving 60 cents per Danish.]

how about pretzel rods dipped in melted chocolate and then sprinkled with nonpareils or nuts or drizzled with white chocolate? they're so simple and always a big hit!

The big hit at DS's Shalom Zachor were mint chocolate brownies:
From Family Fun:

Chocolate Mint Brownies

When wrapped and tied with a ribbon, these fudgelike brownies--with their cheerful layer of mint frosting--look like a pretty, edible package.

ingredients

Brownies
1/2 cup butter
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Mint Frosting
1/4 cup softened butter
2 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 1/2 to 3 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
Green food coloring

Chocolate Topping
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
3 tablespoons butter

What types of foods are typically served at a shalom zachor? My husband wanted to serve cholent and kugel for our upcoming (first) boy, but wouldn't it be after everyone has a big meal already? And do only men come? Sorry I am pretty clueless about some stuff. And also sorry to hijack the thread.

So I also thought only men came, but in my very small community EVERYONE goes- women, children, men.. the works Wink Also in Israel I believe everyone goes... We were part of the modern orthodox community here and there- I think it depends on your community.

The food I have been served and served myself:
Cakes
Cookies
Candy
Veggie platter
Fruit platter
Chips/ Dip
Pretzels
Chocolate covered pretzels
Chickpeas
ALCOHOL
Soft Drinks

In the communities I have lived, it is common for everyone to bring an item to help out.
