I really don't get what they are thinking...
They take out full page ads in the papers.
You call them down to give an estimate and they come eagerly - that day or the next.
HOWEVER, then you DON'T hear back from them as to a price proposal. You have to call and call back...
I don't get it...don't they want my business???
This is not just my experience but also others I have spoken to.
Can anyone enlighten me?

For some, they don't get back to you when they decide that the job is not worth their time.
I've had that problem sometimes too.

It so funny that you say that. My husband says that all these people must be rolling in $- when our freezer broke a few weeks ago, I called over 5 people, all from ads and word of mouth- and this is what these people do for Parnassah- and some of them didnt call back at all, some 2 days later. I guess that BH people are comfortable and not looking for work these days 
It annoys me to no end that I have to beg people to come and work. At least have the decency to call back and say you cant make it.

My dh is a contractor and let me tell you that writing and estimate is very hard its a semieducated guess of how much the project will cost. And how muxh you wanna spend...... So that's why they push it off. Plus they like the actual work of building things and not pticing them!
