OUr basement is stuck in the 60's!!!
It has
- a BAR (yes yes you read me right!) with mirrors surrounding it SOOOO CLASSY!!!
and
- faux wood on the wall
Besides the: just demolish and rebuilt solution which is not an option
What can I do to cover up these elegant 60's faux pas???
The walls look like that

the bar looks like that

you have to imagine shelves all around the bar!!!
Any ideas are welcome
Thank

you can always paint the wood panels. paint em white first and then see what you wanna do with them.

can you take the mirrors down ...
how about cutting the panels down to 4 feet and painting the top half of the walls ...
can you brighten the room with a nice throw rug ...
use the bar as shelving and storage ... (although I know what I'd store there )
it's hard to really say without a real picture ...

you are right Green!
But your idea is great!
The true surprise is what hides behind these boards!
Remember they were not removed for the past 40 or so years!
As per painting the boards themselves as I understood it the faux wood drinks the paint so much that it takes a tremendous amount
Any other ideas?

My parents painted their woodpaneled basement white and it looks great now. Just use a primer first.

If you paint the wood panel, I thought it would look like a beach house!
Which is a great look but then you have to have a nautical theme to it no?
If not how do you decorate such a room with the faux bois / white beach house finish?
How do you manage the BAR section of the basement.
I feel like I'm talking about an episode of the love boat

Try keeping your books on theas shelves. Put down a friendly rug that brings in soft colors. maybe add a few house plants. change the lightings. Pretend there is a window and add sheer shams from the top like mint green or peach.
Use your head and be creative.

why paint white? use color. I personally love warmer colors in a room. so go a bit lighter than the darkish wood, but not white. white is simply blah. I love a good tan color.
you can stencil paint on the mirrors if you don't want to remove them.
I'll have to think about the bar.

I wouldn't paint the panels ... but if you do want to - then use primer as a base before you paint the colour of choice ...
hey if you live in cleveland I'll come and give you an estimate

What do you think of making the bar into a crafts corner.
Paint the bar a nice soft color and stick on pretty wooden flowers n stuff get nice children friendly bar chairs with nice patterns...

my laundry/ mud room is wood paneled. I recently painted it and it looks great. because it has grooves in it the painter primed spackled primed, spackled, then painted. it looks great and ud never know.
also I think that painting the walls white sounds stark and uninspired.
as for the bar, I think u can fill the shelves with books and... and cover the mirror with drapes.
a beach house feel sounds nice. but being that its a basement and it will never get that kind of light , I think it will just look like a nice fresh basement. doing a nautical theme sounds too contrived for ur setting.

Thank you for your wonderful ideas!
I think they are great but as Green stated it is difficult to fully grasp the issue and give advices when you do not see the area.
So lets do this properly:
How can I show a pic of THE basement for you to see?

It's easy to upload pictures to this site--The pictures have to be online already (in an online album...)
This link should be helpful--follow the instructions--

what are you planning to use the room for?
why can't you remove the mirrors and shelving and paint over the wood? the floor looks nice.
our shul had that sort of wood panelling and it was painted white. Looks nautical but nice. Accessorise with navy blue. Or choose a different colour.

Could you turn the bar into a pesach kitchen? It seems that there is already a sink, so you would just need someone to come in and hook up an oven.

the mirrors have to go - wonder what's behind it ...
the floor change to carpet - happy & busy
I like the paneling ...
the wrought iron handrail - change to wood
change the blinds to happy curtains
change the lighting
and maybe makes shelves instead of the bar ...

The thing is that we have a very limited budget 4 the moment.
we have white paint and our hands that is about it.
We are hoping on day to transform the bar in a pesach kitchen but 4 now it is not a possibility. This room is used 4 leisure/playroom
We can remove the whole thing but we are afraid of what we are going to find behind!!!
As per the floor we just had it redone before we moved in so this is why it looks good. (well at least it looks good to us!!!)
Any ideas?

Keep the bar so that you can make into a pesach kitchen one day since you would like to do that.
