Is the name levi something wrong in israel that people think it is odd to call a child levi? my husband said it is as if you are calling someone cohen. But I don't think so.

Levi was one of the Shevatim; Cohen is a title and nothing else so that would be weird.

Our last name is Cohen but dh is a levi, so a friend always lobbied for us to name a son, "Yisroel." Okay, we gave it as a middle name to one because he is named after someone, but just imagine, Yisroel Cohen the levi.

Elise, LOL!!!
That's really cute! Too bad they don't say the last names by Aliyas...
On the topic of unusual names, I was reading that the Maharal's children were called Reichel, Tilla, and Reyalina (?); and his granddaughter was called Lift! Anyone heard of those names nowadays, or know where they are from?

I thought of your post yesterday in shul, it was mentioned in the haftorah (for Yisro)
also in that haftorah, another unusual Biblical name: Sh'or Yashuv as in Sh'or Yashuv Cohen
and there's the name Ruchama from the Navi
Racoma Shain of "All for the Boss" fame, was named Ruchama by her father for the pasuk in Hoshei'a. And there's Ruchama King the author.
the name Emanuel is not common
and a cousin just got engaged to a "Puah"

Adam??
In school I had about 7 Adams in my year, and many of my friends had a brother called Adam. |
seems practically non-existent in the chareidi world
did those 7 Adams pronounce it like in the Chumash?
Quote: | I saw it in a baby book but oh what a cruel name |
why do you say that?
"Noach" is quite uncommon (yes, I know there are R' Noach Weinberg and R' Noach Orloweck) and when it's spelled that way, it looks like it rhymes with "coach"!
I wanted to name our son Noah, but my dh said that you are not supposed to, so we named him Noam instead - now I prefer it anyway!

In Israel there is a family that use names like: "Shema Yisroel" " Shabat Malka" etc. They made it to the book of names. (By Dov Rosen)
Also there is a family that use the sentence:
"MATAI YAVO MOSHIACH" each letter starts a name of a child, so they have:
Matania
Tehila
Yaara
Yoav
........and the name MOSHIACH stands for their last name Sh....Yonathan and chana.....

That's probably a good thing
Motek - no they pronounce Adam like it is written in Hebrew but how does that make them less religious? But yeh they weren't chareidi but still, it's not an uncommon name.
I know a few Noahs aswell and I met a Ruchama recently.

I know here in israel if a baby boy doesn't make it to the world alive or doesn't yet have a name the chevra kadisha names the baby adam one of the reasons why is because not to many people name there kids adam in it not such a common name. now that you say you had seven adams in one year I wonder.....
