What does gittel mean in modern hebrew?
Does anyone know a nice unusual name to go with chana?

In modern Hebrew? Nothing.
In Yiddish, Gittel is a pet form of Gitta, means "good".

Tovit, in fact, could be a translation... and Tova for Gitta/Gutta... but Gittel per se doesn't mean anything in Hebrew.

Gittel comes from the word "git" or "gut" in yiddish. The common hebrew name translation is "Tova".

Another vote for Tova. I know several ppl named Tova after a relative who was named Gittel.

Gittel is a yiddish diminutive for Guta, or "good". Heb equivalent is Tova, diminutive Tova'leh. In Hebrew the diminutive is rarely if ever the official name, though in Yiddish for some reason people are often officially named diminutives likle Gittel, Zeesl, Zundel...It's like officially naming someone Sammy or Bobby.
Of course you could name a girl Gita and claim she's Indian. It means "verse" or "poem" if I'm not mistaken. Wouldn't work if she's a blonde, though.
