It isn't if it's overdone. But muscles are what give you strength to pick up a baby or a box, stand upright, climb stairs, run to catch a bus or a toddler, knead challah...Strong muscles also build strong bones necessary for mobility. When it comes to weight control, muscle burns calories while bone and fat do not. Build more muscle and you can eat more and maintain the same weight.
That doesn't mean you have to try to look like Charlie Atlas (shudder). In any case, not everyone is genetically programmed to grow muscles like that. If you don't have that genetic endowment, you won't look like that no matter how much iron you pump. Some people are more suited to yoga, which also requires strength (and how!) but is all about long, flexible muscles rather than an Arnold Schwartzenegger build.
