Yes and yes. I used them in the UK too, they sell them everywhere--but not the zip-top kind (like Hefty One-Zip), just the regular press ones. I used to bring back zipper bags from the US when I had spare suitcase room.
I use them to store vegetables in the fridge, some of my dry goods like bulk chocolate (we get mice periodically), and when I buy bulk meat, I separate it into one meal sized portions and put them in Ziplocs. I use a lot.
