Any information? I have tried google, but came up empty. I always assumed it was short for Yisrael or Yitzchak, Apparently it wasn't. Please no ideas as to how I can change the name. I do not consider it naming after someone if I change the name.

ISSER is a Yiddish form of YISRAEL meaning GOD WRESTLER (Kolatch, Alfred J. 1984. The Complete Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names. Middle Village: Jonathan David. 119, 251, 255).

There are a number of Yiddish names where they cut the name of Hashem off the name. Eliyahu = Elya, for example. Israel= Isser would be another.
