I sometimes give my kids alchlohol at night if they can't fall asleep, it works wonders... (it's very unoften that they can't sleep, but when kids are teething or sick...)

Aidelmom I am so sorry you went through such abuse. I was wondering what was the name of the medicine (if you know). I am always shocked when I hear parents overmedicating their children. And unfortunately it happens a lot with parents who are not knowledgeable and unable to handle their kids. |
Atarax, generic name: Hydroxyzine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxyzine | They have you an antihistamine.
I am so sorry for what you went through.
Sometimes I give my child benedryl as a sleep aid. Is that abuse? |
My apologies - in my mind decongestant and antihistamine are the same type of drug, but of course they are not. (both are used for kids with colds/allergies).
The FDA and I believe the AAP came out against benadryl as a sleep aid, but I could be wrong. http://www.thechildrenshospita......aspx

I hope it's ok if I ask you, based on your experience if you think giving benedryl is abusive. It's not done in a mean way just added to daily liquid vitamins when necessary.

op,
I think your daughter should notify her employers in advance that she does not administer medications unless they are prescription. vitamins should be given to the kids before she comes. I think it's a reasonable policy.
that being said, there really is not a clear cut line in terms of drugging kids. use your common sense.
