There may be halachic issues with taking a sick day when you aren't sick, so if you choose an option like that, consult your LOR.

It probably depends on the employer. Where I work, a "sick day" is just a loose term to describe a paid day off. Company is small so the boss knows exactly what's going on and has no problem with people using sick days for vacation (our vacation days carry over and increase when we get a raise so we try not to use them), kids being sick, going to the beach in the summer, etc. I guess if the company's makpid that sick days are for when the employee is sick and you want to use it for something else then it would be a shaila.
