What speed is normal for treadmill?
How long?
is 1 mile considered "good" even if done on 3?

if you're just starting out, 1 mile (even on 3mph) is great!
If you're interested in running, I suggest checking out the Couch-to-5k program. It's great and I know a lot of ppl who swear by it. (People who never did exercise in their lives who now run marathons). I wish I could do it, but I don't have a treadmill...
Here's the link: C25K running program

As per Oxygen and Fitness magazines, 3 mph is just a warmup. They want people to exercise at 10 or 15 mph, which I cannot do !!!
FTR, intervals are your best bet on a machine. Do your warmup, then do 10 seconds or a minute or 3 minutes, whatever you can handle, at a very high intensity, then drop down to regular pushing youself for a minute or 2 or 3, then repeat.

If you're just starting out, anything is good!
Once you get used to it, you'll probably find yourself upping the speed to somewhere between 4.0 and 4.5 (for walking) and doing longer periods of time.
