Ever notice how creepy nursery rhymes can be?
Rockabye baby: who puts an infant in a cradle on top of a tree? Reckless endangerment of a child! Of course the cradle will fall, what did you expect? Where are the kid's parents while all this is happening?
Hickory dickory dock: Major rodent infestation, and those rodents are brazen!
The Little Old Woman who lived in a Shoe: Homelessness, poverty and child abuse.

And what about poor Humpty Dumpty? That's a tragedy, if ever there was one!

Yes it does. "ring a ring a rosie" they started off with a rash that turned into abscess, " a tissue a tissue" sneezing also signaled the start of the plague. I'm sure you can figure out "we all fall down"...

That was veiled political satire about some king.
Nursery rhymes annoy me. What do my kids need them for?

How about: Ladybird, ladybird fly away home,
Your house is on fire and your children are gone,
All except one,
And her name is Ann,
And she hid under the baking pan.
or London bridge is burning down, burning down, burning down, London bridge is burning down my Fair Lady. It seems bizarre to make a nursery rhyme about it imho.
or Goosey Goosey Gander where shall I wander,
Upstairs, downstairs and in my lady's chamber
There I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers,
I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs. Delightful, no?
Pop Goes the Weasel makes me think of horror movies and gves me the creeps.
Now Hey diddle diddle sounds like it was made by someone while they were high on drugs.

The King was Henry the VIII. Nursery Rhymes are a wonderful way of introducing rhyming to children - which is vital as a pre-reading skill. It builds upon their understanding of Phonemic Awareness (sorry - I am an Early Childhood Professor). Actually all Nursery Rhymes have to do with Victorian and pre-Victoria England. It would be fascinating to develop some Jewish Nursery Rhymes - does anyone know of any book with Jewish Nursery Rhymes?

I made one up based on ring a ring of roses which children all seem to love:
Cling a cling of tdekodoh
I like to do a mitzvah
a penny, a penny (or pence or whatever currency)
we drop it in
Other jewish songs such as I made a little dreidel has the same effect as nursery rhymes in terms of rhyming.

As a child I had a beautifully illustrated book of Jewish nursery rhymes by Sadie Rose Weilerstein called The Jewish Mother Goose. (NOT the sarcastic one on Amazon!)
Example:
Twinkle twinkle little star
How I wonder where you are
Time to make havdalah soon
Are you waiting for the moon?
But we don't need nursery rhymes to expose our kids to pre-reading skills. What is Adon Olam, Yigdal? A rhyme. What is Shema? A haiku. Shema is a haiku

I heard a complaint that the "penny for tzedaka" has been in effect for so long that it should be up to at least a quarter by now. Why just a penny? Maybe decades ago a penny was a mitzva.

The value of the coin was not what I focused on when I wrote it, for one I am not american and have no idea how much or how little a penny would give you. If you dont like it change it to something you prefer like a dollar or a shekel (although for all I know this is also not a lot or something else. The goal of the song as I said was not to teach the children the value of different curency but to have a positive yet fun song.

If you want a jewish twinkle song the classic is:
twinkle twinkle kochavim
shining in the shamayin
if you say shemah today
everything will be ok
if you say shema tonight
everything will be allright
