Does anybody know how to make one? I looked on line, and they are so expensive! I really want something small - a lappad or pillow, but even they run $40-75. They seem like they wouldn't be hard to make, but I'm wondering how to fill them properly, and with what.

Google how to make a weighted blanket. I found many options.

I have made weighted vests and small blankets. For a small lap cover you may use a pillow case:
* turn it inside out and fill with sand (which you may purchase from a Craft Store - though I use sand from a lake beach and then just sift it)
* I normally place 2 - 4 lbs of sand
* sew a straight line across the 1/2 'line' of pillow case and then fold over the finished portion of pillow case and then sew the top portion close
* When I make these for my ASD children - I will often add either dried lavendar or pine needles - as the scent is very calming. I will also place the lap covering in the freezer or microwave - as some children like the coolness or warmness next to their skin.
Lap blankets will last for at least a year.

I believe I read that you may also sew drapery weights (small rectangles) into the corners and perhaps more along the edges. It weighs it down a little and is good for sleeping but is nothing like the weight of sand.
